Although the first post office for Jerusalem was founded in 1837, postal delivery from Brooklyn began before 1780. In 1790, the community founded its first school. Ridgewood Stop, the town's first LIRR station, was renamed "Ridgewood Station" sometime in the 1880s. Ridgewood was renamed Wantagh afterward to prevent confusion with another town in New York State with the same name.

In the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, Jerusalem was a rural agricultural village offering fishing and hunting expeditions to inhabitants of adjacent New York City. Wantagh underwent significant transformations during the twentieth century, as the town became a summer holiday destination for city inhabitants in the years between the two world wars. After WWII, the demand for housing for returning soldiers prompted a surge in home construction, leading to the creation of a new living environment known as Suburbia. The remaining farmland was converted into housing complexes, and the Jerusalem colony dissolved into North Wantagh and South Levittown.
