The hamlet's northeastern section, known as Roslyn Plaza, underwent a large urban redevelopment effort during the twentieth century. The Roslyn Plaza Urban Renewal Project began in the early 1970s and culminated in 1983 with the groundbreaking of the final phase. The Town of North Hempstead was responsible for this project.

The "Roslyn" element of its name is shared by Roslyn, Roslyn Estates, and Roslyn Harbor and may be traced back to when the name "Roslyn" was selected for that hamlet because the landscape reminded authorities of Roslin, Scotland. The "Heights" element of its name refers to the part of the neighborhood built under the name Roslyn Heights, which was also the name chosen by the Roslyn Heights Post Office when it opened in 1913. What is currently known as Roslyn Heights was once known as Hempstead Harbor, as were many other portions of the Greater Roslyn region, until the name was changed to Roslyn in the 1840s.
