History

On May 25, 1887, Lord hosted the largest land sale in Southern California. He sent brass bands up and down San Bernardino and Los Angeles streets, inviting people for a free ride to the new town he named after himself, Lordsburg.

Over 2,500 people accepted the invitation and purchased approximately $200,000 worth of lots. Development of the area soon began. The most notable building was Lord's large hotel, with more than 60 rooms. Lord and other investors invested roughly $70,000 in constructing the huge hotel.

The hotel in Lordsburg was finally completed and waited for its first guests, but no one came. It is believed that the hotel never had a paying guest. It is realized that there were only a few residents except for construction workers and tradesmen. Speculators were soon left with worthless land.

In 1889, M.M. Eshelman rode a Santa Fe excursion train to La Verne. Eshelman was a member of the "Church of the Brethren" and had just established a Church college in McPherson, Kansas. Fellow Brethren George McDonaugh sought out Eshelman to use the hotel in Lordsburg.

George suggested the hotel would make a perfect college building. Eshelman was captured by George McDonaugh's idea, secured support from associates, and offered for the hotel. Eshelman asked for 100 city lots to be thrown in on the deal, offering $15,000 for the hotel and the lots.

The offer was accepted, and Eshelman soon joined McDonaugh as an agent and launched a campaign to bring Brethren members to Lordsburg so that their younger members could go to the college they established. There was an immediate influx of people, and by November, they had formed a congregation.

The college opened in 1891 with 8 faculty members and 135 students. Since then, La Verne and Lordsburg have become a magnet for Brethren people. People came to retire and enjoy the advantages of living in a college town.
