Unfortunately, the effort proved futile when the vote lost to a 94-vote margin, retaining West Hempstead's name over the proposed Mayfair Park. West Hempstead's name reflects its location immediately west of the Village of Hempstead.

West Hempstead covers approximately 2.8 square miles, with roughly 2.7 square miles of land and 0.1 square miles of water. The community lies on a gently sloping terrain between the Hempstead Plains and the Atlantic Ocean. PineStream runs through its center, feeding into Halls Pond. The CDP is bordered on the south by the Southern State Parkway and the east by Hempstead Lake State Park.

In a 2017 American Community Survey, 19,841 people and 6,148 households were in the CDP. Its racial makeup is 70.8% White, 12.8% African American, 0.5% Native American, 9.5% Aian, 11.3% from other races, and 4.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinos comprised 20.3% of the total population.
