South Floral Park is a small incorporated village in Nassau County, New York. It had an estimated population of 1,741 in the 2020 census. The village of South Floral Park was incorporated in November 1925 as the village of Jamaica Square. This name has been used since the area was developed in 1905.

The history of South Floral Park goes back to July 4, 1643, when a local tribal chief put his mark on a deed for the land that would become present-day Elmont. He negotiated with Reverend Richard Delton and some English colonists for the purchase of the Hempstead Plains.

This treaty permitted the settlers and their heirs to enjoy the land forever, freely, and peacefully. The land purchase also included areas of today's Valley Stream, Laurelton, Rosedale, Springfield Gardens, and Bellerose.

The land was divided among 66 settlers; among them were the brothers Christopher and Thomas Foster. The Fosters named their part of the land Foster's Meadow. It was an expanse of flat land with endless green fields suited for farming, raising sheep, and hunting game inhabiting the flatlands.

Soon after that, the Foster brothers began selling off sections of their land to some farm families. In ten years, the population of Foster's Meadow had only risen to eighteen families. It wasn't until the 1800s when German farmers from Brooklyn journeyed to Foster's Meadow to work on the vast farmlands.

In the late 1800s, a plank road cut from local trees at a sawmill signaled growth in the local population. Additional growth was evident with the construction of the original schoolhouse in 1865 on Elmont Road. As enrollment increased, children went to Belmont Blvd. School, now known as Clara H. Carlson.

The village continued to grow, and in 1918, the United Methodist Church of South Floral Park was constructed. The congregation's first pastor was Edgar Jackson, serving from 1918 to 1922. The old church remained an important part of the community and was declared a historical site by the Nassau County Planning Commission in 1976.

In 1925, the village was officially incorporated as the Village of Jamaica Square. The name refers to the village being directly down the road from Jamaica, Queens, and next to Franklin Square. Residents voted to incorporate because they wanted their government to rule on local issues.

The village was mostly dirt roads and farmland for potatoes and asparagus until incorporation. It had well water and outhouses and had no streetlights or electricity. The new village's first mayor was William J. Ruppert, and while in office, residents agreed to rename the village South Floral Park in 1931.
