Today's Roosevelt was once part of the heavily wooded section known as the Great South Woods. Its natural advantages and geographical position drew settlers since the area was on the important road between the "Town Spot" at Hempstead and the landing at Freeport.

First known as RumPpoint, the village was a little agricultural village with two taverns, a store, and fifteen houses. Deeds before 1830 refer to the area as Rum Point. 

It became known as Greenwich Point, a thriving paper manufacturing and agricultural center following the Civil War. The name change was because of a temperance movement that swept the country, bringing the name Rum Point into disfavor.

Industry during the time was varied. Farming produced dairy products, grains, orchard fruits, and vegetables. Merchants bartered these products for liquor, furniture, dry goods, and other merchandise.

Mills also flourished, most of which were located around East Meadow Brook. There were paper, grist, lumber, and sawmills. The most important industry was making flies for freshwater fishing and trout raising. Blacksmith shops were also plentiful in Roosevelt.

By 1900, Greenwich Point had a population of 1,500. It was a rural village with a business center on Main Street, bordered by farms. Greenwich Point changed its name to Roosevelt at the turn of the century.

The name Greenwich Point was not accepted by the Post Office authorities, as there was already another village with the name Greenwich Point registered in the state. In honor of Theodore Roosevelt, residents chose the name Roosevelt in 1901.
